Electrical Safety Tip # 1: Using EPOD's safely

The way most EPODs (Electrical Portable Outlet Devices) are used is that they are plugged into a free wall socket-outlet and the EPOD containing typically 4 to 8 socket-outlets lies on the floor adjacent to that socket-outlet.
This portability leaves the EPOD open to risk of physical damage, in that they can be easily dropped, stood upon, and caught under furniture. This damage is not always apparent and is often not noticed. The result of this damage often leads to poor electrical contact between plug pins of appliances connected and the EPOD. Check regularly for wear and tear. If the EPOD is damaged, stop using it and replace it.
Poor electrical contact and overloading is a major cause of electrical fires, especially if the appliances connected draws heavy current loads, such as:
- heaters
- electric jugs/kettles
- washing machines
- stoves
These appliances should be plugged directly into wall socket-outlets, not EPODs, because if used together they could exceed the "Total load" rating of the EPOD. Never use them in damp or wet areas if marked “For indoor use only".

Electronic Waste - a better solution:

While completing testing at a school recently, we were made aware of a company called "Computer Recycling Ltd" who can come and pick up electronic waste from your business and take it away for free. With the speed at which technology moves and evolves these days, technology can quickly become obsolete. How to dispose of old computers, screens and printers is often a problem and they can end up being sent to a landfill which is not the right outcome for the environment. Computer Recycling have the solution and they will pick up from your place of work for free if you have more than ten items or you can drop it off at their premises in Penrose.
For more information about this service see www.computerrecycling.co.nz

December 2009:
Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010 to all of our customers and partners!
LecSafe NZ would like to wish our customers and partners a safe and merry christmas and a prosperous and enjoyable 2010.
We recently saw an article on the www.stuff.co.nz news website which serves as a timely reminder to everyone about the risks involved with overloading multiboxes. Click here to see the full article.
During the course of our electrical safety inspections, testing and tagging we often see too many electrical devices connected to multiboxes (sometimes more than one) and running from one electrical outlet. This overloading creates a higher risk of electrical fire due to the heat and power running through a concentrated area. It is always safer to install additional electrical outlets (GPO's) where they are needed instead of loading up multiboxes. Any testing we complete will include recommendations such as this in the summary report provided.

April 2009:
APPA Conference: LecSafe NZ is a proud sponsor of the APPA (Auckland Primary Principals Association) and attended the annual conference on the 7th and 8th April 2009. Not only were there a number of interesting speakers on a broad range of topics but also an area where LecSafe had a stand set up. During the breaks, we got a chance to meet principals and talk to them about our services and how we could manage their electrical testing programs for them. School principals have such a busy and varied role and they tend to wear many hats. As such, compliance is an issue for them in many areas wich is why more and more schools are taking advantage of LecSafe's electrical testing program. We take the hassle out of compliance and provide a tailored, cost effective program which gives principals peace of mind knowing their electrical items are safe for use in the school and that their program is compliant with the AS/NZS standard and all required documentation is provided.
March 2009:

The next stage will be the addition of a client login section. LecSafe's customers will be given an individual username and password which will enable them to access their own information (such as testing reports, service agreements etc) on line from anywhere - watch this space!
